Quick guide: one cubic metre is about a box trailer heaped level. If you’re stuck between two sizes, go up one. It nearly always beats paying for a second bin.

Heavy or light: why it matters

Heavy waste is anything dense: dirt, clay, sand, rock, bricks, pavers, tiles and concrete. In a 2 to 8m³ bin there’s no weight charge at all, and a load of only concrete (steel included) is cheaper again.

Light waste means household junk, timber, plaster, packaging and garden clippings. It’s bulky for its weight, which is what the 9m³ and 12m³ are designed for.

Keep it level

Nothing above the rim, please. An overfilled bin can’t be lifted or driven legally, and it delays your pick-up.
